SCHOOL OF STUDIES IN MICROBIOLOGY

Programme Offered :

i) M.Sc. in Microbiology

ii) M.Phil in Microbiology

Profile of the Department:

The school of Studies in Microbiology came into existence in 1995 under the Self Supporting Programme. The two year M.Sc. programme in Microbiology is based on the Semester system with objective to produce manpower in the applied areas. Presently various fields of teaching include Bacteriology, Virology, Biochemistry, Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Genetics & Molecular Biology, Fundamentals of Infection & Immunity, Food Microbiology, Tools and Techniques, Microbial Physiology, Recombinant DNA Technology and Microbial Technology. So far seven batches are come out and  almost hundred percent of  the students are absorbed in various Laboratories and Industries. Additionally, on an average 3-4 students qualify NET/SLET examination. Students also qualify International level tests for Ph.D. programme.

The department has introduced a scheme in which the students were required to deliver weekly seminars on the specific contemporary topics which expose them to the recent research in the relevant fields. Besides these, in the final semester of M.Sc. course, the students undertake an extensive programme of supervised practical/training work at various reputed National Institutes and Industries like National Institute of Immunology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Centre for Biotechnology, National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Tata Energy Research Institute, PGI, Chandigarh, CDRI, Lucknow, SGPGI, Lucknow, NBRI, ITRC and CIMAP, Lucknow, CCMB and CDFD, Hyderabad, CFTRI, Mysore, Reddy’s Lab, Hyderabad, BAARC, Mumbai, Cadila, Ahmedabad, Ranbaxy, Gurgaon, Dewas and Jajuri, Lupin Laboratories, Mandideep, Dabur India Limited etc.

This enables the students to gain insight to the relevance of modern Microbiological techniques to applied research and development in the public and private sectors. The results of the project work are presented in form of dissertation at the end of the semester. During the last few years, the department has understood the need for providing trained manpower in Microbiology and focused its attention to integrate research and teaching to explore maximum mutual advantage and has emerged as center for excellence in imparting quality teaching and training at post graduate level. The department has also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad and National Research Centre for Mushroom (NRCM), Solanfor strengthening Research and Teaching in the modern areas of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering. Recently the department has been chosen as Subcentre by National Biodiversity Board (NBDB),Govt. of India to prepare the Inventory the Microbial Resources of Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh under the National Project “Inventory of Microbial Resources of India” funded by Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India) New Delhi.

The post graduate course in Microbiology offers excellent opportunities for carrier advancement and students can look forward for being absorbed in private/public sectors/autonomous organizations. It is needless to  emphasize the scope of Microbiology in Industries. Both the private and public sectors are undertaking interest in the applications of Microbial Technology like synthesizing new drugs, proteins, enzymes, antigens and diagnostic materials.
