1. Profile of the Department

The School of Studies in Biochemistry came into existence in 1986. The School offers Postgraduate and Doctoral Programs in Biochemistry and Biotechnology.  The School attracts students form all over the country and the admission to both PG courses of the school are made through a national level entrance examination to ensure admission of students with academic competence. The teaching program of the department has been on sound footing.  A vocational training in national research laboratory/Industry has been incorporated in the curriculum of post-graduate course from 1996 onwards.  The School owns a reasonably good library and books worth Rs. 1 lakh are added every year. 

Good infrastructure for advanced research in various fields of Biochemistry and Biotechnology is being procured by the School and research programs are being initiated with full vigor. The proposed thrust areas for research in the School include Molecular Biology, Biochemical Toxicology, Genetic Engineering, Reproductive Immunology, Immunodiagnostics, Immuogenetics, Pesticide Biochemistry, Tissue Culture, Environmental Biotechnology, Clinical Endocrinology and Tropical Diseases. The school attracted research grants to the tune of Rs. 50 lakhs from national as well as international funding agencies. Additional research proposals submitted by individual members in the fields of Pesticides, Bio-chemistry, Immunology, Vector Biology and Clinical cndocrinology are under active consideration by various funding agencies such as Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, University Grants Commission, Indian Council of Medical Research, Madhya Pradesh considering collaborative research program with sister departments of the campus and other Institution of the city such as Defence Research and Development Establishment, Collaborative research programs being planned with other Institutes include BHU, MGIMS, Sevagram and Madhav Institute of Science & Technology.Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University.  The School of Studies in Biochemistry and Biotechnology is envisioned to develop into a nucleus of advanced research in the years to come .

2. Eligibility

(1) Candiates with Bachelor's degree from Jiwaji University or any other Univeristy/Deemed University/Institute recognized by the University, securing not less than 50% marks are eligible to appear in Entrance Test for admission.

(2) Bachelor's degree should be with any three of the following courses/subjects : Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry & Zoology.

6. Course Structure

Two years with two semesters in first year and two semesters in the second year. The first three semesters consist of four papers each while the final semester consists of two theory papers and training

The Teaching programme is strengthened by distinguished  Visiting Faculty which includes scientists of national and international repute from various Universities and National Laboratories.

The School has well furnished laboratories with sophisticated instruments including Gas Chromatograph, Uv-vis Spectrophotometer, Gel documentation system, High speed refrigerated centrifuge, CO2 incubator, DNA Thermo cycler, Cold room, Clean Air work sation etc.
