Profile of the Department
The Department was established in 1984 for the implementation of
various UGC Programms like eradication of illiteracy, planning
forum, each one teach one, area development approach, Jan Shikshan
Nilayam, short term continuing education, training & programmes,
self financing short term courses and population education
programmes etc.
During this period the Department has been identified among 11
Universities in India for being considered for the UNESCO Award 1999
on the basis of its performance. During the 8th plan
period, as per direction of the UGC, it is elaborated as a
full-fledged teaching department of the University, nomenclatured as
School of Studies in Continuing and Extension Education and started
post graduate programmes from 2000
Scope of Course :
- It
has been presently recognised that the education imparted
to the students is hardly equipping them to provide right
job opportunities.
- The
School of Studies in Adult/Continuing Education has been
seriously thinking to fill this gap, by preparing suitable,
need based course, which can give the youngsters and students
an opportunity to understand and realities of life and train
to work in various fields of Social Work and Extension,
where they can be identified as useful Manpower to the Society.
- Those
course being multidimensional, professional course in the
field of Extension and Social work, and is practically oriented,
will help to develop the personality, communication skill,
analytical approach and sensitivity.
Teaching Programmes
The Xth Plan guidelines of U.G.C. suggested to develop
the discipline of Androgogy/ Adult / Continuing & Extension
Education, through academic programmes. Accordingly Department /
University created a separate branch of Adult / Continuing &
Extension Education, with due permission of various academic &
administrative bodies like academic council, planning & Evaluation
Board, Executive committee of the University & then co-ordination
committee of M.P. Universities, by a separate ordinance No. 73 & 74.
with the provision of ordinance, the department elevated as
University teaching department with the nomenclature of School of
Studies in Adult / Continuing & Extension Education. Later on, it
was restructured as school of studies in continuing & Extension
Education.
Profile of Subject
Extension Education and Social Work:
Adult Continuing Education & Extension have become
important components of University Educational activities and
function since the 1970s. Universities are no longer practiced as
institutes of higher learning with focus on teaching and research.
Universities also have to reach out to the community within which
they are located and extend to the benefit of their knowledge and
learning of the community. Particular emphasis in on developing
programmes. In this context, UGC brought out a policy on higher
education that recognized extension, apart from the traditional
function of teaching and research, as a third dimension of higher
education.

Placement- The
course curriculum will have emphasis on concurrent involvement of
students in the field for social work practice, through regular
placements in various identified institutions/Centres/NGOs, which
is compulsory for all students.
