Short Summary of Teaching and Research accomplished: For the last five years the main subject of teaching have been genetics, cell & molecular biology and general zoology. During this period several new practical exercises on molecular biology, microbiology and cytology were included to provide exposure to the students to some of the state of the arts techniques in modern biology .In teaching courses, some of the basics of human genetics and cytogenetics were also included in view of the current development in the field of human genome mapping and its future implications. The main subject of research work has been on the molecular organization and functional analysis of heat shocks genes and the heat shocks protiens (HSPs) in two model dipteran files, blowfly Lucilia cuprina and housefly Musca domestica. Characterization of basic heat shocks response system of these files was made following analysis of HSPs and the cytological study of the heat shock gene loci. Further investigation on the functional role of the some of the major HSPs. HSP70KD and HSP60KD during normal developments and during stressed conditions are being carried out using immunological based methods, such as western blotting, immunostaining & immunofluorescence with the help of specific antibodies. Regarding understanding the molecular organization functional significance of the HSP genes, Molecular cloning and characterization of HSP60 and HSP60 genes from Lucilia cuprina are under progress. Possible application of HSPs as molecular biomarkers in the assessment and monitoring of environmental toxicity is also under investigation. Use of transgenic fly for the biomonitoring purpose is also under study. Under the DBT Associateship at North Western University, USA, investigations on the transcriptional regulation of mammalian heat shock genes was carried out.
